when i left a few years back, the only thing on 4th street was -'s and the not too successful place right next door. west can certainly be that pretentious, so much more so that or LA. but then the nice thing about west is that it's so everywhere is good. just walk down the street on blvd. if you have time, aside from driving all the way down to the OC, you could also try beach. it's still a ways from west, but plenty of bars and stuff around that area as well. and definitely not as plastic as west.
